Bringing Scripture to life
through the art of theater.
Today many people are unfamiliar with Scripture or have become disengaged from it. Even for believers, reading the Bible can sometimes feel distant or purely intellectual, disconnected from the ancient practice of hearing God’s Word spoken aloud in community, through stories and poetry.
The Challenge
Through creative performance and teaching, Scripture Speaks helps people see and hear the Word of God come alive again. By merging theater and Scripture, Damian Leverett and his wife, Anna, invite audiences to encounter God’s truth in a creative way that engages different parts of their minds and hearts.
Their mission is simple: to bring Scripture to life through theater. They want both seekers and believers to experience Scripture as something living, powerful, and deeply personal.
The Opportunity
Scripture Speaks uses the creative power of theater to engage people with God’s Word in transformative ways. Their ministry includes:
Theatrical Performances – Original shows centered on the words and stories of Scripture, performed in churches, schools, conferences, care shelters, and beyond. Recent works include The Shadow of the Star, a dramatic retelling of the Christmas narrative from Matthew, and The Word Among Us, a two-person dramatization of Jesus’ life and ministry combining stories from all four Gospels and original music.
Worship Events – Gatherings that feature long-form Scripture recitation, inviting people to experience God’s living and spoken Word as an act of worship.
Workshops & Training – Multi-week and single-day sessions that teach others how to memorize, meditate on, and share Scripture using practical techniques drawn from years of professional acting. Scripture Speaks loves working with multi-generational groups—recently leading a summer workshop for teens where each student memorized a story, Psalm, or section of an Epistle.
Through these performances and trainings, Scripture Speaks seeks to reconnect the church and the world to the spoken tradition of Scripture – helping people encounter God’s living Word in creative and transformative ways.
Damian and Anna believe the Bible is the primary way God speaks to us and reveals Himself today. Through Scripture Speaks, their goal is to equip individuals to be vessels of God’s Word by teaching them how to memorize Scripture and share it with others.
Memorization changes us, renewing our minds as we learn and meditate deeply on its meaning. Declaration changes not only the speaker, but very often the hearer as well, bringing God's Word to life in unique and powerful ways.
The Approach
By partnering with Scripture Speaks, you help bring God’s Word to life for audiences and communities who may never have experienced it this way before – alive, creative, and deeply moving. Your prayers and support make it possible for the work of Scripture Speaks to be completely accessible to all, avoiding ticket sales and allowing God’s Word to reach across the U.S. and beyond.
